General Description

The University of North Alabama seeks an energetic, innovative, proactive, and service-centric tenure track faculty member to oversee library information and discovery systems, as well as other specialized library systems, in a highly collaborative environment.

The successful candidate will provide broad support, including first-line technical support and day to day administration, for all aspects of library systems, software and technology, such as the integrated library system (all modules), discovery tools, and the institutional repository. Primary duties include management, configuration, maintenance, implementation, and troubleshooting of systems and the library’s website to ensure optimal performance.

The successful candidate will also collaborate to facilitate consistent discovery and access to library resources across all platforms and formats, and will act as primary liaison with technology vendors and the campus IT department. Additionally, the faculty member in this position will provide research and input on new technology systems, software, and equipment to enhance the operation and services of the library.

Faculty librarians at the University of North Alabama work in a highly collegial environment and are expected to take leadership roles within the library and university-wide. Librarians must demonstrate a commitment to faculty status/rank and engage in an ongoing program of scholarship and professional service adequate to achieve tenure and promotion in a competitive environment.

Essential Job Duties

• Support library technology in a collaborative, team setting;
• Manage the integrated library system (Innovative’s Sierra);
• Serve as the primary liaison to the ILS vendor for problem resolution;
• Serve as the library representative to vendor users’ groups;
• Manage the configuration and integration of discovery tools (EBSCO EDS, EBSCO Publication Finder and LinkSource, public catalog), an open access repository, and authentication software (EZProxy);
• Design and run queries to extract and deliver data from local systems to stakeholders and other systems (ILS, discovery layer, instiutional repository, etc.);
• Manage the library’s web presence through coordination of and collaboration with the library’s Web Team, including the library’s website and Springshare applications;
• Develop web technologies to enhance user experience;
• Serve as the chief liaison in technology matters, such as hardware and networking, to campus IT and other campus units, and representing the library in collaborative, cooperative technology efforts;
• Promptly report issues/problems to campus IT and/or vendors with follow-through until resolution;
• Manage and support, in collaboration with campus IT, library makerspace and digital media lab;
• Support other library specific software, such as OCLC Connexion, Tipasa, and MARCEdit;
• Support library hardware & equipment ;
• Provide statistical, usage, and collection reports in support of decision making for library collections and services, including usability;
• Troubleshoot electronic resource access problems;
• Create and implement strategies for storage and long-term preservation of digital collections;
• Work closely with faculty and staff in technical services, access services, and other areas where library systems (ILS, ILL, etc.) are vital to daily operations;
• Assist library users and library faculty and staff with desktop applications and specialized software;
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Applied experience in current computer programing languages and web technologies such as PHP, Perl, Python, XML, CSS, or other comparable tools;
• Demonstrated ability to work with database management systems, such as MS SQL, MySQL, MS Access, or other comparable tools;
• Experience in digital preservation initiatives, such as LOCKSS, open access tools and platforms;
• Understanding of accessibility standards and accessible design.

Minimum Qualifications

MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program, required (Degree must be conferred prior to January, 2018);
• At least two years of successful library technology experience supporting library software applications – such as ILS, institutional repository, etc. – required.

• Demonstrated knowledge of best practices, issues, and trends in library information technology and integrated library management solutions;
• Experience in multiple computing environments;
• Superior oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and knowledgably;
• Potential to meet faculty tenure and promotion requirements in a competitive environment;
• Strong service orientation;
• Familiarity with technology standards and protocols such as Z39.50, XML, OAI/PHM harvesting protocol, HMTL5, JavaScript.
